It’s noteworthy that, when she is on her own just before Macbeth returns with bloody hands (having done the deed), she confesses that she would have carried out the murder herself, but Duncan reminded her of her father as he slept. And although she says she would kill her own baby, she is trying to outdo her husband in ruthlessness here, and spur him to ‘man up’, as she sees it. She doesn’t personally kill anyone in the play, although a modern court of law would still come down heavily on her for inciting her husband to do the deed and acting as his accomplice. Yet to an extent, she is villainous more out of what she says than what she does. Not only does she urge her husband to murder their King for no other reason than heartless ambition, she also states that she would dash out her own baby’s brains rather than lose her courage for such a regicidal act. Lady Macbeth is unable to deal with the guilt caused by her actions, eventually leading to an untimely death. Shakespeare even has Macbeth refer to Lady Macbeth as a man in a woman’s body. Through this portrayal, Shakespeare showed a perspective well ahead of his time. Lady Macbeth’s role as a powerful woman is contrary to the belief at the time that women were the weaker sex. She convinces Macbeth that he must kill Duncan and become King. Lady Macbeth is significant to the play because she represents a strong, determined woman. Lady Macbeth is a character of extremes-going from selfishly brave to weak and mentally unstable.Ģ. The mindset of Lady Macbeth soon changes, showing her weaker side when she is unable to cope with the guilt caused by her actions and commits suicide. When Macbeth carelessly brings the daggers out of the room where Duncan was murdered, Lady Macbeth takes charge and shows her bravery and ambition by bringing the daggers back to the room herself. Her strength and bravery are also evident here because she shows she will get what she wants no matter the risk. ![]() She is willing to murder a respected King in order to get what she wants. This shows that she is selfish and cruel. When Lady Macbeth is first introduced, she is a woman who wants to be “unsexed” so that she could commit the murder of Duncan herself. Throughout the play, Lady Macbeth transforms from a character that has total control of her life to a character who is so overwhelmed with the consequences of her actions that she commits suicide. Lady Macbeth is a woman with strength, bravery, and ambition however, at the same time, she can be described as weak, selfish, and cruel.
